BOSTON (Reuters) - Scattered violence broke out after thousands of Boston Red Sox fans converged on Fenway Park to celebrate their baseball club's historic win over the New York Yankees that puts them in the World Series.

Local television footage showed most fans milling peacefully around the ballpark after Boston's 10-3 victory over the Yankees in New York. But a few dozen people turned violent, jumping on cars, lighting fires, fighting and vandalizing signs and storefronts before police in riot gear moved in to disperse them.

Police said they made about half a dozen arrests and about the same number of people were injured in the fracas on Thursday.

Boston police had warned in advance they would not tolerate any post-game violence and deployed hundreds of officers around Fenway Park.

In beating the Yankees, their arch-rivals, in Game Seven of the American League Championship Series, the Red Sox became the first Major League Baseball team to overcome a 3-0 post-season series deficit.

The win means Boston will play in the World Series for the first time since 1986, where they will attempt to win their first championship in 86 years.
